New Beginings

Circle:

  • Name tags should be available so each child can create one for himself or herself upon arrival
  • Chairs should be arranged so that children sit in a circle
  • A teddy bear should be placed on each chair
  • The group leader begins the circle session by welcoming the children and reviewing the purpose of the group
  • The leader introduces the theme for the evening
  • Each child is asked to introduce himself or herself, give his or her age and tell the group who it is they love who has cancer (mom, dad or other)

Purpose of Session:
This session discusses the experience of new things in life. Children are asked to volunteer something new they have experienced and how it has affected their life. Talk about how these changes can be fun or scary and how loving someone with cancer is a new experience. Have the children write their responses on a large piece of paper on an easel. At the close of the meeting, discuss how new things are simply a part of life.

Activity:
Leaders should choose an activity:

  1. Plant crocus bulbs in small clay pots for children to take home
  2. Take Polaroid pictures of children
  3. Plant grass seed on wet sponges

Crafts:

  1. Paper daisies:
    • Have construction paper available so each child can construct paper daisies
    • Place the child's picture in the middle of the daisy
    • Write the "new beginnings" that were mentioned during the discussion part of the program on petals
  2. Crocus bulbs:
    • Provide each child with a flowerpot
    • Sponge paint flowerpots
    • Plant crocus bulbs in pots according to directions on bulb package
